A rather predictable "Bloodsport" clone...

When I sat down to watch the 2025 martial arts action movie titled "Gladiator Underground", I have to admit that I wasn't exactly harboring the biggest of expectations to the movie. Why? Well, the title first and foremost, it was just permeating a crappy martial arts action B-movie. But still, since I had never even heard about the movie, prior to sitting down here in 2026 to watch it, I opted to give director Chaya Supannarat's movie a fair chance.Writer Ariel Bleiberg put together a script and storyline that essentially was just a clone of the 1988 movie "Bloodsport", except the fighters were less memorable and far more covered in tattoos. Sure, the movie proved to be senseless entertainment, as it was just one fight after another, so your intellect is hardly being challenged here, should you opt to sit down and watch "Gladiator Underground". A rather predictable storyline, no doubt, and you know how the movie will play out before you're even five minutes into it.The dialogue in the movie was pretty shoddy, especially the first banter that was shared between the two brothers Max and Wu Yen in the beginning of the movie.Of the entire cast ensemble in the movie, I was only familiar with D. Y. Sao and Brian Le. I have to say though, that I was rather impressed with Apasiri Kulthanan's performance, though I had never seen her before. The acting performances in the movie were fair.It should be noted, though, that there were some good fight scenes and sequences throughout the course of the movie, and that certainly helped to add to the overall impression of the movie.Watchable, for sure, especially if you grew up watching 1990s martial arts movies. My rating of director Chaya Supannarat's 2025 movie "Gladiator Underground" lands on a five out of ten stars.

not the best, not the worst...

Literally thousands of martial arts movies have been made over the years, but barely a handful stand out as memorable. The original (and infamous) chop-socky Hong Kong films don't hold up at all, bad choreography and bad sound effects. Most modern films have much better choreography but fail on story, dialog, audience connection. GLADIATOR is not the worst of the current crop, but it is not the best either. The action scenes pop, the backstory ... meh. On my IMDb master list, I have 5 of the best martial arts films of all time, with Warrior 2011 at the very top of the list. ((Designated "IMDb Top Reviewer." Please check out my list "167+ Nearly-Perfect Movies (with the occasional Anime or TV miniseries) you can/should see again and again (1932 to the present))
