Average

I went to see "How to make a killing" thinking it was some sort of comedy thriller. Given Glen Powells cheesy grin in the poster, and the way some of the ads made it look. But unfortunately the movie kind of killed itself making me think this.I guess it almost works as a tame thriller. Glen Powell looks the part, and Margaret Qualley is great as a potential love interest that isn't all she seems. But those expecting Powell to be some sort of Patrick Bateman here will be disappointed. There just aren't that many laughs for what could have been a great black comedy, and as I kept watching it I knew there wasn't going to be any big laughs, big surprises, or anything really. The ending really sums it all up by not being as clever as it thinks it is either.

Fun, but could've been better

"How to Make a Killing" is a fun little black comedy about eating the rich.Unfortunately, while the film's concept is admittedly entertaining, the actual story seems to be lacking something. A stronger bite or a clearer message would've helped with my own personal enjoyment of it.And, for all of the quirky side characters that are featured in this film, none of them really get the chance to feel properly developed. Which is disappointing. So the movie definitely isn't as strong as director John Patton Ford's last film, "Emily the Criminal."

Glen Powell does it again.

How to Make a Killing (2026) is a black comedy thriller movie written and directed by John Patton Ford and it follows Becket Redfellow as he looks to reclaim his inheritance from his wealthy family after they have disowned him since birth. This is a movie that I was looking forward to as I was a fan of Ford's previous movie, Emily the Criminal (2023), and I like the cast of actors. Well I just got done watching the movie and it was great.Positives for How to Make a Killing (2026): This movie feels like a classic revenge story where you have a main character wanting to get back at the people who wronged him with a black comedy twist to it. These are my types of movies as it is always fun to watch the main character beat the villains for what they did to him. Glen Powell is great as Becket Redfellow and he has the natural charm to get people to root for his characters in every movie he's been in since his breakout role in Top Gun: Maverick (2022). You also have Margaret Qualley as Julia Steinway and Jessica Henwick as Ruth and thier different dynamics with Powell are fun to watch. The rest of the supporting cast is awesome as the rest of the Redfellow family, who are excellent at getting you to hate their guts. The movie does a great job at building up the tension as we get to see Powell take out his family one by one. There is some action that was fun and filled with tension. And finally, the movie has a good pace that moves the story smoothly.Negatives for How to Make a Killing (2026): My one issue is that I never bought into Margaret Qualley's character to be a childhood friend to Glen Powell as she has this stuck up attitude about her which was clearly intentional on the part of John Patton Ford except I didn't like her. I also let down by the ending as it wasn't satisfying for me.Overall, How to Make a Killing (2026) is a damn good black comedy thriller movie with a fun cast and premise I can get behind on even if it fumbles the ending for me personally.
