Charli XCX is a Star

I am a fan of Charli XCX and her music. Now she is starring in a new mockumentary, as a version of herself, called "The Moment". Also with Alexander Skarsgard as a film director directing her concert movie that she clashes with. And with Rosanna Arquette, and Kylie Jenner in a cameo. It is about Charli XCX preparing for her tour connected to her album "Brat". It reminded me of the HBO show "Entourage". It was also somewhat similar to the Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night".Unfortunately there is very little of Charli XCX 's music in the film. What is in the film is interesting and entertaining. I cared about her character and wanted her to succeed. I thought it was a good movie.

Sellout a.k.a Anxiety: The Movie

This film had a lot going for it during the first hour. It was high energy, felt chaotic but focused and had pretty great performances across the board. It kept my interest in a way that few films of this style have. However, the last 30 minutes or so left a sour taste in my mouth as we watched Charlie XCX unravel everything, it seemed, she worked so hard for. She sold herself for little to no reason beyond self-indulgence and took a big step backwards. It just didn't make much sense to me and rendered the entire experience kind of worthless.Overall, I still enjoyed the film for the most part. It has this energy that could've inspired a panic attack in the right individuals. That ending though, for me at least, made the film almost null and void. This wasn't a film about rebelling against the establishment. It was a film about becoming complacent in it, which was frustrating after the unruly and anxiety inducing first hour of it. It also makes no sense considering Charlie XCX never did any of this in real life. Instead, she triumphed and reveled in her party nature. I wish she had done the same here, and we, as the audience, were given more of a banger ending that this story deserved. Also, as a side note, it should have featured her music a bit more. The opening is about all we get of the amazing club performance art the artist is known for. Shame on the creators for not utilizing her entire star-power here2.5 critical moments out of 5.

Why did I watch this, lol

I walked out of The Moment basically thinking, yeah that was kind of boring. I kept waiting for it to click or say something interesting, but it never really did. Maybe if you're really into Charli XCX it hits differently, but for me it just felt pretty flat.It touches on a few ideas about getting swallowed up by the whole pop star machine or letting an old version of yourself die, and that could have been interesting, but the movie never goes anywhere with it. It's like it wanted to be a satire but didn't push hard enough to actually make a point. So it ends up feeling kind of vague and half formed.Charli's whole vibe has always been party girl energy, so maybe I shouldn't have expected emotional depth, but I thought the film might have a little more to offer. Instead it just felt like a watered down caricature that didn't commit.Overall it was watchable enough, just not very engaging. I'd give it a 3 or 4 out of 10.
