Plot summary

Facing the end of their relationship, a couple road-trip into the countryside to find the spot they fell for each other. But hopes of rekindling their love turn into a terrifying cycle of abuse and supernatural madness.

"Love is Endurable."

That sentence wants to be deep. Almost philosophical and that's exactly the problem with How We Ended Us: The film wants to claim meaning instead of earning it.For me, this film simply doesn't know what it wants to be. Relationship drama? Psychological horror? Metaphor about toxic patterns? It touches on all of that but commits to nothing and because of that, none of it really works in the end.The mirror idea isn't bad. The woman in the house, the past repeating itself, the relationship observing itself that's a premise you could do something with. But the film stays permanently stuck in suggestion. It shows that something is there but refuses to follow through. No escalation. No emotional climax. No point where it actually hurts.As a relationship drama, it remains too detached. As a horror film, too tame. Nothing takes hold, no scene lingers. Everything feels controlled, smooth, and ultimately inconsequential.Then there's the biggest problem: the center of the relationship. She's still okay, carries her insecurity, her observing, her slow tipping point. He, on the other hand, doesn't work for me at all. The male actor seems miscast, flat, without inner tension. And when the emotional counterweight is missing, a film that consists almost entirely of a relationship inevitably collapses.D + A 4E stands there like a memory of something that once had meaning. Just like this relationship. Just like the film itself. An idea of depth that never gets delivered.In the end, there's no resonance, no insight, no real pain. Just the feeling that the film is more concerned with itself than with what it wants to tell.

Is this love?

Is this just ... well I'll say not love? If you know the song I am referring to: no pun intended and also not all lyrics apply. Some may - but I was adamant to use the one about love - because our two main characters ... well as they say with many relationships: things are complicated.Whomever you deem to be more in the right or wrong about things ... by the end you should know if you guessed right ... or wrong. In the meantime this is there to (jump)scare you ... not all of those work and the story is quite ... well paper thin .. still if you like horror movies, you could do worse I suppose.
