A Better Sequel Than I Imagined

LIKES: Cinematography Decent Pace Relevant Spiritually Powerful Heartwarming At Times The Humor The Messages The Music The Acting Summary:I have to give it to these types of movies; their cinematography is phenomenal when it comes to expressing emotion. This sequel uses the close-up effect very well to give you that big, emotional, church-like shot that audiences love. With the right lighting, the right angle, and the other elements I talk about, MercyMe's career has some wonderful sequences that use the camera just right. It conveys something powerful and uses the simplest of tricks to do such heavy lifting. The music helps with this, as spiritual songs resonate in the theater as they transition to the next story nodes. There are, of course, elements where the music is more of a background ring, and I enjoyed the more subtle use to help add that finesse to the camerawork. It will be the concert moments that get fans moving in their seats, several elements pulling those service vibes out that I wouldn't be surprised to see audience members lift their hands to join the worship. The final number is going to be the biggest wow factor, and as my first time hearing the song, it's quite a beautiful performance that accomplishes so much in one sequence to summarize the entire ordeal, including the end credit song that has a good hold to it.Past this, the movie's main thing is going to be the message that MercyMe's journey has always been about: God's handling of our lives during the toughest times. There is massive relevance in this movie, elements that are a bit contrived and major, but the circumstances can be extrapolated for you to enjoy. It's spiritually powerful, holding the promise of the Bible's lessons and motivating you to do your best to get through the hardships. Heartwarming to say the least, this sequel is able to bring a lot of those sweet moments that melted several of the audience's hearts. There are several good relationships developed in this film, and I loved the down-to-earth moments between the preachy elements, a band of brothers that have a lot of close elements that I personally resonated with. Mainly for the humor, the jokes aren't too intense, harmless pranks that you would see played at camp, with a touch of sarcasm/bad-timed humor that is wholesome and fun. The messages are deep in much of the movie, and for the target audience, this will be a major element to seeing this movie, perhaps finding inspiration in the words. There are so many moments designed to elicit tears, and I think there will be few dry eyes with how powerful the directors have crafted these moments. The actors accomplish a lot of quality acting, hitting the marks well with their realistic roles, delivering the lines just above a soap opera/Hallmark level when they get emotional, but feel natural when they are interacting as a band.DISLIKES: Pacing Flaws Annoying Elements They Fixate On Character Integration Is Uneven Loud Preachy Hollywood Moments Triggering (Warning) Summary: With the dislikes, it's going to be the reviewer in me that picks this apart, as I think the likes for the target audience, who is going to be so immersed in the spiritual elements. As a movie, though, I Can Only Imagine 2 suffers from pacing flaws at times, primarily uneven and moving like a seesaw between the extremes of too fast and too slow. Several elements get dragged along, becoming hyper-focused and slowing the movie down without really adding any suspense, build-up, or much of anything past the good word. Other times, they go very fast, and the elements that could use more development get merged into a montage of quick scenes that act like a mosaic to make something bigger. They aren't horrible, but the first movie did better with the balancing act. One limitation that also remains is character balance. The sequel is a bit more about the band, his family, and even his manager, all vying for the limelight. While I think it is fine, the movie still falls short and tries to cram such a concentrated mass of stuff into such a short run time that it robs many things of help with controls. And the parts they do are annoying elements that get the magnifying glass, and sort of undermine some of the growth we saw in the past. Again, I get this is the lesson at hand, but I sort of didn't like the main character by the end, nor did I like how much logic was stretched out of proportion or contrived when these characters actually had intelligence to them. I guess you need this level of drama to pull the intensity in, so that the Hollywood moments can deliver the preachy content in hopes of stirring the emotions up. That formula works very well for the lesson teaching aspect, but as a movie plot, it's a bit predictable at this time and growing a bit stale in terms of the unique moment. What's ironic is that for a movie about music bringing people together, that aspect is surprisingly limited in terms of memorable numbers outside a couple of quips and two numbers, and the final performance. When I come to these movies involving music, I always hope that they will do a few numbers justice, and this movie missed that mark to some degree. A caution for those with delicate hearing, the music numbers were loud in my theater, so exercise caution when you choose to view it. And some of the content is going to be triggering, so if you aren't ready to face those demons in a movie, then please exercise caution. The VERDICT: I Can Only Imagine 2 was a sequel that I wasn't sure was going to have any relevance or necessity, given how the first movie ended things so completely. To some degree, I can say this movie did have a bit more usefulness in continuing the journey, teaching another lesson that is fitting and relevant in the grand scheme of life. The sequel uses a lot of the same tricks to accomplish the goal, a strong camera and musical venue being a powerful foundation to strong material designed to enrich your soul and improve your moral compass. Powerful emotions spring forth like a rejuvenating fountain, using relevant stories and approaches to help drive the point home, but adds that Hollywood touch to help make reality a tad more exciting. With a strong finale in terms of music and that heartfelt wrap-up, the key audience is going to be enamored with what they have accomplished. Outside of this segment, though, the movie still has some balancing issues to work out, especially with character elements and pacing. Trying to cram such a large swath of time and so many competing stories had this constant see-saw effect going on, which grew annoying at times when they became hyper-fixated on the annoying flaws that undermined much of the original movie. Several key characters felt a bit flat, contrived coincidences arose too quickly to cement things up, and there were just some elements that felt missing or a bit rushed. Outside of that, limited musical numbers and triggering content round out this film's experience for me. Therefore, was the film worth a trip to the theater? Yes, if you are part of a church group, Bible study, or some collection that matches those scenarios, you will fully enjoy all they brought to the film. The rest will probably get the most at home.My Scores are: Drama: 8.0 Movie Overall: 6.5-7.0.

Touching continuation of the story

Welcome back to the dulcet tones of Mercy Me. I'm glad so many of the same actors came back for part 2 of the story. The story mainly focuses on the 2nd generation father and son story. For me, however, the best part was the addition of Milo Ventimiglia. I've enjoyed his acting over the years and was not disappointed in this role. I like how he can transform himself in subtle ways so that you almost don't realize it is him until you see that characteristic crooked smile. By the end I was wishing we could have had more of Tim Timmons story. Tim was portrayed in such an engaging and honest way you wanted more of it. I have to admit the struggle between Bart Millard and his son Sam was a little repetitious with the first I Can Only Imagine film. Both actors gave solid performances, but they kept clipping in scenes from the first movie and that added to the repetition vibe. I'm sure that is the point, illustrating how old relationship patterns can reproduce if you don't fully heal and move on from the pain of the past. So many people assume they can break the cycles of abuse or toxic ways of coping with only grit and determination, forgetting that when things get difficult we often revert to old patterns unless we learn new ways of coping. The movie has a great message of resilience in the face of life challenges; that openness and communication is better than hiding from your problems. After the movie I watched an interview on Youtube from the "Kingdom Story Company" channel with Milo Ventimiglia. Fun fact I got to hear his last name pronounced correctly for the first time. I recommend checking the interview out after watching the movie. The main reason I gave the film 8 out of 10 stars is the film did drag a little for me in the middle. Overall though I thought it a very sold, well crafted film. The singing was great as usual, raising your spirit towards heaven.
