Touching tribute

A short tribute to Russian director Larisa Shepitko, made by her husband Elem Klimov the year after she was tragically killed in a car crash at just 41. There are lots of fantastic stills of her and some great clips from her films, including her masterpiece The Ascent (1977). I wish there had been a little more depth and that it had included interviews from those who knew her, like Tarkovsky, but we do get to hear recordings of her commenting on the need to remain true to oneself in art, as Dovzhenko had done (she had him as a professor for a year and a half, before he died). The final thing she shot before her death, an eternal tree bathed in fog, is sublime.

A moving tribute to his late wife by a leading director

When Elem Klimov's wife (herself an important director) died suddenly in a road accident he was obviously devastated. This tribute to her reflects his emotional farewell to her through the medium they both loved, and includes a powerful montage of moments from some of her films (like The Ascent)... which in Klimov's hands becomes part of his overwhelming testament of loss. You can almost feel his tears on each frame of this film, which is a moving work of art in it's own right. Larissa is never self indulgent, and manages to be private and public, sad and, somehow, glorious at the same time.

Alongside Come and See, this is probably Klimov's best - and certainly most personal- film.
