Kashyap Calling Kashyap

Anurag Kashyap hates it when someone mentions Gangs of Wasseypur to him. For more than a decade, he insisted angrily, frustratingly that he doesn't want to repeat himself by making GOW like movies, And yet with Nishanchi, Anurag Kashyap does just that. Repeats himself. This is a retread of the same filmmaking recipe - Nishanchi is GOW ultra lite if you will. A much milder, much less fun version. The movie's biggest weakling is its story or the lack of it. The movie is largely told as a recap, starting from a bank robbery gone wrong to the story of Vineet Kumar Singh, father of the twins. This is the only portion of the movie that feels real and hits emotionally. His story of a wrestler not being given his due, his loving wife, his family, and his eventual revenge followed by betrayal by his friend are done well. His death in a jail cell, him getting flashes of his life - from his biggest regret to the moment when he first sees the love of his life, his wife. A truly moving scene. But after that comes a long, almost pointless story of the twin brothers growing up, getting manipulated by cunning uncle, murder, jail, return, killing the girl's father, romance, lull, more lull, and then a weak ending, which felt both toothless and incomplete. Now, coming to the retread of GOW. GOW was blistering because of the intergenerational revenge story tied in with the story of India's growth and decline. What worked spectacularly were its colorful bunch of characters, the quirky setting, the wacko music, earthy songs, and most importantly the fact that all of this was fresh and new at the time. Something the audience hadn't seen or heard. But a decade and half later, after countless rip-offs, retreads, and rewatches, that recipe is no longer new. It comes across as both amusing and dull. Seeing the mundane workings of henchmen and politicos in 2011 was fresh but today it is just too damn boring, considering we are bombarded with it 24x7 any which way thanks to supreme leader and company. The actors are interesting but nothing much to be said about anyone except the central trio. Aaishvary Thackeray is good, especially as the timid, shy younger son. As the flamboyant elder son, he is good but not always on point. Sometimes the performance shows and doesn't feel organic. But as the soft spoken, shy guy, he does very well and is thoroughly convincing. Monika Pawar is brilliant as the mother. Truly an actor of great calibre. Vedika Pinto is up to the mark, mostly. Vineet Kumar Singh portrays a talented man not getting his due despite acing every test, something he has spoken about several times. He lives and breathes the part and is most memorable in the movie. The supporting cast is good but feel like lite versions of characters we have seen before. Finally, the title, Nishanchi. Why is it titled that when there is so little of it in the actual movie? It is there during the childhood when the kid is shown as a sharp shooter, but where does it vanish for the rest of the movie when the boy grows up? One can imagine Kashyap is saving it for part two? But that does not help THIS movie. The mother is a target shooter and this aspect should have been given prominence here itself instead of leaving it for the next episode. And if you want us watch the next part, then how about an ending that is not lame and weak like this one? The girl's discovery and her feeling of shock and betrayal do not hit hard because she is shown at the very beginning as someone who knew her lover was an accomplice to the murder. And she was ok with that. Also her reaction to the murder was that the killer was probably just doing his job. So her reaction at the end does not seem completely believable. Overall, the movie really tests your patience, gives you some good moments, couple of great songs (Pigeon Kabootar, Neend bhi teri), and then ends with a whimper.

Nishaanchi marks a powerful debut for Aaishvary Thackeray, and what a debut it is! Playing a double role in your very first film is no easy task, but he handles it with surprising ease and maturity. Both characters have distinct body language, dialogue delivery, and emotional weight, which makes them feel like two separate people on screen. The film has its share of flaws in pacing, but Aaishvary's performance keeps you hooked till the end. The action sequences are well-choreographed, and the background score lifts key moments. The emotional scenes are handled delicately, never feeling forced. His chemistry with the supporting cast is also worth noting, especially in the family-driven portions. Nishaanchi also benefits from crisp editing that avoids unnecessary melodrama. The film may not be a groundbreaking story, but it is a solid entertainer with strong performances. Aaishvary is definitely a talent to watch out for. If this is his first step, the future looks very bright.
