If you need a great summer horror film

If you need a great summer horror film, watch Pitfall! Many recommendations abound for certain, but James Kondelik definitely knew what he was doing from the very beginning of the film. He is joined by Victor Rose who wrote the screenplay and producers Alex Bogomolov and Wei Sun Cheng who are all master storytellers and get the storyline to make something that adds more depth to movies like the Friday the 13th franchise and even other thrillers like the Wrong Turn series which makes camping trips more anxiety-provoking than they already are. But still more impressive is the cast that includes Marshall Williams, Richard Harmon, Brenna Llewellyn, Alexandra Essoe, and the villain, Randy Couture and just to name five actors. Every actor, however, deserves mention as they not only keep the backstory going of a family forever marred by a tragedy, but forced to keep going forward even as they are being hunted down.

Pitfall has the elements to be a good outdoor slasher film, but it fails in so many ways. The characters weren’t likeable and their story seemws confusing. Like why were two grown adults travelling with their parents? Just so many questions to the writers as to why things were. So many things that didn’t make sense. One scene in a forest of pines, the villain was spotted in a big sprawling Oak tree. So dumb!

We got actors who I love and an engaging premise that seemed like Wrong Turn meets Most Dangerous Game. Unnerving and unsettling. Director James Kondelik makes a beautifully filmed majestic forest come off as terrifying. This is Jaws for the camping crowd. The writing is outstanding during the slow burn first act where we meet the amazing characters. The problem with characters this good is it's rough to watch them get killed and one of those kills was so brutally well done it had me in tears. The action begins when one gets separated and falls into the title #Pitfall trap impaling his leg while the rest futility search for him, unaware that they are prey being stalked by a sadistic hunter. The pit scenes are intense in a claustrophobic nature. The pacing is good despite the film being a bit too long and the slow burn suspense ignites into a violent, carnage filled inferno by the last act with so much edge of the seat, nail-biting suspense going on all at once. Just a great film!
