I prefer near kisses over near misses

Just missed her

I'll call this a "missed connections" movie. The two main characters, Kim and Malcolm, are introduced at an eclipse 7 years ago. After it they go their separate ways. Now there is another eclipse and they are both back in town for best viewing, but neither knows the other is there too. Begin a sequence of just missed encounters. Of course that is one of the main plot points. The writer is going out of his way to have non-meet-cutes. And they are kind of cute. Don't get frustrated by them.To fill the viewers' hunger for a romantic story where two characters are actually building a relationship, there is a secondary couple, Travis and Claire. Each is a close friend of the main unmeeting couple but don't know they are connected. Yet somehow Travis and Claire never bring Malcolm and Kim together.It's not hard to figure out what's going to happen in a general way which will somehow include fulfilling each of Kim and Malcolm's personal and professional dreams. But how that will happen remains a mystery until close to eclipse time.I came to this movie excited because Sarah Drew has become one of my personal favorites. But the first half was hard for me to watch because Kim is inept and timid. Neither of the traits are ones I associate with Drew's usual characters. Of course, her character transforms miraculously somewhere in the middle of the movie.In some ways the movie doesn't take itself too seriously because so many of the situations lack credibility. That Kim would get the assignment, keep the assignment, have the assignment advanced, and then look like a love sick puppy on air are all examples. But no one expects realism from Hallmark rom/coms.When the credits rolled my thought was that this movie was perfectly sappy to the point of being very cheesy. And I'm sure that's what the writer was going for.
