A Very Different WW2 Film

Without grandiose special effects or a large pyrotechnic budget this is a more character driven film exploring the motivations and actions of individuals against a backdrop of almost casual brutality. The cast of, mainly young, actors bring a freshness and naturalistic approach to the material, that makes it a compelling watch. With young people, especially young women, being increasingly radicalised and weaponised by politically extreme ideologies, the film can be interpreted as an allegory for today's increasingly divisive politics. Finally, I love that they used actual, real, film, not just digital. It really helps put the period into period drama!

Enjoyable with good performances

Aryan Papers leans heavily on its performances, and that trust largely pays off. The young actors Jacob Ogle as Benjamin and Niamh Ogle as Judith bring an unaffected naturalism to the German-born Jewish siblings, grounding the film's most perilous storyline in quiet fear rather than sentimentality. Their restraint makes the threat feel constant and real. Leona Clarke portrayal of Helga is particularly effective in tracing ideological certainty curdling into moral panic, while Celia Learmonth gives Gisella a weary resolve that speaks to displacement and survival. Together, the cast elevates a deliberately spare production into something emotionally credible and haunting.I got lost halfway through with the flashbacks on flashbacks but quickly caught up.

Thoughtful low budget film

What Aryan Papers lacks in scale, it compensates for with focus. By centering on two young women trapped inside the Lebensborn program, the film finds emotional urgency in small gestures and difficult choices. The limited locations and cast enhance the claustrophobic atmosphere, underscoring how ideology closes in on individual humanity. The low budget occasionally shows on the edges.
