It was okay...

While perusing the Netflix catalogue of stand-up comedy shows, I stumbled upon the 2026 show "I Ain't Playin'" from Bruce Bruce. And since I had no idea who this comedian was, I opted to sit down and watch it, and give it a fair chance. The contents of the show was good, because Bruce Bruce delivers comedy that is more than below-the-belt jokes. He takes real life situations and puts his own personal comedy twist on it. And it was definite a good thing. I was brought to an occasional chuckle here and there, but never a burst-out-laughing moment throughout the course of the show.Bruce Bruce does have a good on-stage charisma, though it would have been a bit better if he was more animate, instead of just leaning back against the stool without much of any movement going on."I Ain't Playin'" is a fair enough comedy show, though hardly one that spurred me to venture out and get to watch more of his material. My rating of "I Ain't Playin'" lands on a five out of ten stars.

Bruce Bruce is Superior

I really enjoyed Bruce Bruce's comedy special. By now, he's a veteran at the game with a measured pace. A true master of his craft. His life stories are imbued with funny insights! Many of his jokes begin with "Let me tell you something". I love his delivery as he covered many topics ranging from relationships, shopping, farting and even his niece.

Welcome (back) treat!

After a 15-year wait for a new special, the "Mayor of Comedy" is finally back on our screens, and it feels like he never left. Watching Bruce Bruce: I Ain't Playin' on Netflix isn't just watching a stand-up set; it feels like catching up with that one uncle who always has the best stories at the cookout. The first thing you notice is the rhythm. While Bruce has understandably slowed down the rapid-fire, high-energy delivery of his early ComicView days, he hasn't lost a ounce of his charm. In fact, the "slower" pace works in his favor. It gives him the space to breathe life into every anecdote, moving with seamless transitions from one scene to the next. He isn't rushing to the punchline because he knows we're enjoying the journey. His connection to the audience is impeccable. He doesn't just talk at the crowd; he pulls them in. He uses those classic "agreeing questions"-where the whole room responds in unison-to make the special feel like a shared conversation. You can tell the audience in Chicago was right there with him, nodding along because they've lived exactly what he's talking about. The material itself is a "welcome back" treat for anyone who appreciates grounded, observational humor. He leans heavily into the Old-School vs. New-School divide, but without the bitterness often seen in veteran acts. Instead, he finds the funny in: Family DynamicsI Ain't Playin' proves that Bruce Bruce doesn't need gimmicks. He relies on honesty, timing, and that signature Southern warmth. It's a comfortable, hilarious hour that reminds us why he's a legend. He might not be "playin'," but he's certainly still winning.
