A Bad Trip Film...

It's always sort of a warning sign when the distributors of the film feel like they need to be dishonest about the content of a film. There is no "dangerous man", our heroine doesn't "fall under his spell", and she's not "drawn" anywhere. That said, here goes --In "Mile 666" we follow Dishes (Gracie Gillam), who is hiking the Appalachian Trail with her dog, doing a "Food Vlog." After a while, she stops at a hostel and hangs out with the hippies who are staying there and the woman who is running it. She also hears Biblical stories, eats some mushrooms and has a seriously bad trip. After leaving, she continues on the trail where she runs into one of the dudes from the hostel (named "Achilles") and they continue the hike together and continue to eat mushrooms...Honestly, not sure how I feel about this flick. There are a couple of pretty major issues -- firstly, the way the film is put together it's really hard to figure out what is happening sometimes, we're not sure if it's an hallucination or reality. That's a challenging thing to try to pull off -- if successful it's very powerful. But I don't think the director succeeds, and it just ends up being confusing. Secondly, we are following Dishes as our protagonist but for some incomprehensible reason after she meets up with Achilles the movie spends some time following him, even though he is, really, just a random dude and we have no interest in him. And finally, I have no freaking clue what happened at the end. I mean, I can see what's happening but my reaction was, "What? Is that real? How did that happen? What?"Even with all that, though, I was sort of fascinated. Gracie Gillam was an appealing heroine and and I was rooting for her. I really wanted to know what was going on and how it was going to end. It kept by interest throughout the 90 minute runtime. And for a small indie film, not sure I have the right to ask for more than that.

Cozy horror indie

Cozy horror indie movie gem that takes you on a spooky journey along the Appalachian Trail. Mushrooms, cabins, campfires, and beautiful landscapes. Has a great sense of place, environment, and the real feel of being a trail walker who might just be safer alone than with the hiking community. Lots of interesting elements that intertwine to make a thoughtful and strange impact. Definitely worth seeking out!
