Actually a very decent romance film

People We Meet on Vacation is a quietly confident romantic drama that understands its characters before it ever tries to impress its audience. Directed by Brett Haley, the film leans into emotional honesty and patient storytelling, allowing the relationship at its center to unfold in a way that feels natural, believable, and earned. What immediately stands out is the direction. Haley has a strong grasp on tone, letting scenes breathe instead of rushing through emotional beats. The film takes its time building the connection between the two leads, starting from friction and misunderstanding and gradually evolving into something deeper. Rather than forcing grand romantic gestures, the movie focuses on small, intimate moments-conversations, silences, and shared experiences-that slowly reshape how these characters see each other. The screenplay is one of the film's biggest strengths. It's sharp, warm, and refreshingly restrained. There's humor throughout, but it never undercuts the emotional stakes. The story delivers twists that feel organic rather than manipulative, often steering away from the obvious path just when you think you know where it's headed. Each character arc is thoughtfully developed, showing growth not just as a couple, but as individuals learning what they want and who they are.Emily Bader and Tom Blyth are exceptional together. Their chemistry is effortless, and they sell every stage of the relationship-from guarded tension to emotional vulnerability. Both performances feel grounded and sincere, making their love story feel less like a fantasy and more like something that could genuinely happen. The recurring "Vacation Alex" line becomes a subtle emotional thread, symbolizing their shared history and unspoken bond.In an era where romantic films are often dismissed as unrealistic or disposable, People We Meet on Vacation pushes back against that notion. It treats romance with respect, showing that love stories can still be mature, emotionally resonant, and deeply human. This is a film that invites you to slow down, pay attention, and believe again in the power of connection.

Surprisingly good!

I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It was original & funny. I've lowered my expectations over the years regarding these straight to streaming movies, but this one definitely exceeded them. The two leads are likable & have good chemistry. Watching how they meet & then continue their friendship over their once a year vacations was really fun. It's clear at the beginning of the movie that their friendship is strained. I enjoyed watching how things progressed over the years & what led to where we find them in the beginning. The scenery was beautiful & their relationship was very believable. Overall a good movie that I would definitely watch again.

Would've made a better miniseries

Good acting from the leads, great performances but the spark from the novel was missing. As a fan of the book, the story was way too condensed and way too many plot points were altered or completely removed. This would've benefited from being a limited series thru Max in the vein of White Lotus with each episode being a different past vacation then flashing to the current timeline.
