For the classic lit/history buffs

Sometimes, you just want something classic, and this film tells a straightforwardly Medieval Gothic tale of bad people, cursed knights, and religious peasant superstitions. There's something almost folkloric about the story it tells, calling to mind "Stingy Jack" and "The Green Knight." There is nothing flashy or shocking about it, but it kind of feels like the sort of old ghost story you'd tell around a campfire, albeit fleshed out with extra detail for the screen.It's not perfect, (the actors' accents are all over the place, for one,) but I liked it and I think people who like a slower pace, linear storyline, and fans classic English literature will find a soft spot for it.Strong points are that nostalgic, classic superstitious feel of it I already mentioned, and the characters. Morwen is an absolute master of the manipulative guilt trip and about as classic of a nasty hag as you can get without green paint. Jago's very human, outsider story of being a grabby-jealous orphan child who grew into a man horrified by war and religious guilt lends some counter weight of reality to this supernatural tale, and a voice of reason. They also made a moderate effort to ensure the costumes had some historical touches, like spiral lacing and I was thrilled to see the women in caps!Weak points are the slower, linear pace, lack of modern pizzaz, and some might not like the use of medieval religion, which was an integral part of their lives, so you can't really get away from it. Sophie Turner is the weakest link of the three and can't do a different accent to save her life.It's a simple story told simply, and embellished at the edges.

I will watch it more than once

Interesting plot, beautiful visual film. And of course especially good actors. Sophie and Kit are amazing, their chemistry is so, so great, I wish there was more them, I greedy as Jago. Sophie is so beautiful, historical setting suits her, it's a shame that Kit doesn't have curls, but he's still handsome.
