Really awful attempt at a great genre

I love found footage as a genre and it's great for low budget or indie horror, but theres nowhere to hide in it. The writing and directing have to be good, and this just wasn't. The opening scene has an unexplained camera man, and that continues. There are tons of camera angles that wouldn't really exist within the premise of the film. The characters react in a completely unrealistic way. And there's absolutely no story. We don't find out anything about anything, it's just a vague premise that's poorly filmed for 70 mins. It felt like it wanted to just be plotless splatter horror but didn't have the budget so settled on endless shots of nothing with repetitive jump scares instead.

Review for the House on Haunted Grounds

This was a film that I got the chance to see thanks to The Horror Collective. They've picked this up and it is hitting BloodStream later this year. When the screener was offered, I was intrigued since I have enjoyed the other film from DBS Films. Outside of knowing that this was released in 2026 and that it was in genre, I came into seeing this blind.Synopsis: they walked into a haunted house with a history of possession and murder. The victims never came out, but the footage did.We start this with two police officers doing a check at a house. They're looking for a young woman. They hear a scream, giving them probable cause to go in. What they find in an isolated room is the dead body of a woman in a garbage can. Behind them is a person in a clown mask, holding a woman at knifepoint. What we'll learn later is that this name is Lester Morgan. He's a notorious serial killer in the area. The cops shoot when he kills his hostage. We then meet our leads who host a ghost-hunting show, Amy (Logan Thomas) and Tony (Andrew Thomas). This is their final episode as Amy is ready to move on, while Tony hopes success will secure another season. Their team includes Brad (Stuart Maxheimer), who runs tech from the van. Kate (Cashmere Moniqué) is a production assistant on her first job and the cameraman is Dylan (Dylan DeVane). It should be noted that there was an incident where Brad hit something with their vehicle so Tony took the keys with him.The team, except for Brad, breaks in and sets up cameras and equipment. They attempt to contact spirits using a Ouija board, Este method, and other techniques. Odd things begin to happen, escalating into terror. Tony uses Lester's name like an incantation and his reflection remains still as he leaves. Glimpses of activity are caught on camera and with their equipment. It turns into a night that none of them will ever forget, if they can get out alive. That is where I'll leave my recap and introduction to the characters. The film uses a found footage style, which I largely appreciate, though there's a minor inconsistency with when the mounted cameras were put up in some rooms. I won't hold this against the film overall, especially since I like the mix of body, mounted, and Dylan-following camera work, which provides diverse footage to tell the story. Being a fan of this style also helps. Now that I've set that up, let me delve more into what we're getting. This has a common set up where we have a ghost hunting show going into a place that has a past. We've seen this done both in real life and used in films. It is an easy way to present the story as there is the built in understanding that comes with it. The only drawback that I'll say, because of how often it is used, it can be difficult to set your story apart. I still enjoy it being used despite the potential difficulties that come with it.Let me then bring up what is done to try to set this apart. It is playing on the fear of clowns, since that is what Lester would wear when he was killing. We are also going supernatural as well, since it is a haunted house film. This team does multiple things to wake up the spirits, putting them at risk. There are a few scares done that get under my skin, like us seeing something but our characters don't. That makes me uneasy. I also like the reflection not moving as well as finding this hidden room. That is a throwback to 'old dark house' films, which I'm a sucker for. That should be enough for the story so over to the acting performances. Logan and Andrew Thomas are solid leads. Amy is tired of Tony's antics, subtly pushing back as he insists the show could continue, concluding she no longer needs him. Maxheimer seems nerdy but dangerously asks much of the characters. Brad calling out Tony was a surprise. Moniqué and DeVane, plus the actors playing ghosts, fit their roles well. The acting's amateur feel was acceptable. All that was left then was the filmmaking aspects. I've already said my piece on the style. The setting makes these more eerie, especially it being in the dark. Found footage adds to that atmosphere. Finding the hidden room builds on it as well. We get great practical effects here. I wasn't necessarily expecting them and it went brutal. I'm assuming there was CGI also used, but if it was, it was done subtle and didn't stand out. I do like the diegetic use of sound so credit that design there. No major issues with how this was made.In conclusion, this is a compelling and effective entry into the found footage subgenre. This 'ghost hunting show in a haunted house' film finds fresh fear with serial killer Lester Morgan and strong supernatural elements. It succeeds via diverse camera work, unnerving scares (especially missed subtle moments by characters), solid practical effects, and atmospheric setting. Amateur, yet fitting, acting is grounded by the dynamic between Amy and Tony. This brutal, unsettling watch is a must-see for found footage/genre fans when it hits BloodStream, if you enjoy well made lower budget films. My Rating: 6 out of 10.

The bootleg remake of the first one

If you watched the first one, then feel free to skip out on this one until it's free. Literally a mirror image of the first except with worse acting, storytelling, and music. Even the deaths were the same, very unoriginal and disappointing! Don't let the high reviews fool you into spending money on this abomination. I want my money back! Lol.
